Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
