Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge specific rulings made by the chair umpire, following the system already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
